New York: UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk has issued a major statement regarding the recent conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan. He said on Friday that 56 Afghan civilians, including 24 children, have been killed since last week due to increased hostilities between Afghanistan and neighboring Pakistan.
The conflict is primarily occurring in border areas, where Pakistani forces are carrying out airstrikes and shelling, reportedly targeting armed militants hiding in Afghanistan. Taliban forces, Afghanistan's de facto rulers, have also retaliated, further escalating the situation. This violence has endangered the lives of civilians living along the border and exacerbated the humanitarian crisis.
Since the beginning of this year, a total of 69 civilians have been killed and 141 injured in Afghanistan. These figures have been verified by UN officials. Volker Turk expressed deep concern over this escalating violence and said that the situation demands political dialogue, not increased use of force. He appealed to the Pakistani military and Afghan security forces to immediately cease hostilities. In particular, he stressed that both sides should prioritize helping the millions of people who depend on humanitarian aid. Border conflicts are impacting aid work, leading to a growing number of displaced people.
The conflict intensified last week when Pakistan launched airstrikes inside Afghanistan, prompting retaliatory action from the Afghan side. According to reports, Pakistani forces have killed several civilians, including children and women. The United Nations Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) has also confirmed civilian casualties in recent days. This situation is further complicating an already existing human rights crisis in Afghanistan, where restrictions on women and girls already apply. Volker Turk has called Afghanistan a graveyard of human rights and demanded the international community's attention.
The United Nations has appealed to both countries for an immediate ceasefire to allow humanitarian aid to be delivered. This incident has raised questions about regional stability and raised concerns in neighboring countries. It is hoped that political dialogue will soon end this crisis.
